What Actually Matters When Choosing Flooring (Beyond Price)
Most people come to flooring with one question in mind: “how much is this going to cost?”
And while that’s completely understandable, it’s not always the question that leads to the right decision. (and not for the reason you might think!)
After years of working in flooring design and meeting people in their homes and businesses, I’ve learned something important, the floors people love most aren’t chosen because they were the cheapest or the most expensive, they’re chosen because they fit.
They fit the space. They fit how the room is used. They fit the feeling someone wants to create.
So if you’re standing at the beginning of a flooring decision and feeling unsure, here’s what actually matters, beyond price.
1. How the Space Is Really Used
Before we talk about colour, style or even material, the first thing I look at is how the space works in real life, not how it looks in photos or how you think it’s “meant” to be used. But how it’s actually lived in.
Flooring doesn’t exist in isolation. It supports everything that happens on top of it. If it doesn’t suit the reality of the space, it doesn’t matter how good it looks on day one it won’t feel right long term.
Getting honest about this upfront instantly narrows the field and removes a lot of unnecessary stress.
2. The Feeling You’re Trying to Create
This is where I see people get stuck straightaway. Clients often arrive with screenshots, Pinterest boards, saved Instagram posts, stunning rooms that are styled to the max.
They love the look but are scared to think of the budget. But the truth is, most of the time, what people are responding to isn’t one specific floor, it’s more the general aesthetic and the vibe that the room gives them.
My job is to translate what you love about it into a flooring choice that works for your unique space, vision, lifestyle and your budget. Once you land on the look you’re aiming for, there are many ways to recreate it, some of them far more practical and affordable than people expect.
Good design isn’t about spending more, it’s about choosing better and supporting you in that process is what I love most about what I do.
3. Seeing Flooring in the Right Light (Literally)
One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing flooring in the wrong environment but up until now, there hasn’t been any alternative options other than going to a showroom to browse samples. Here’s the problem: showroom lighting is bright, controlled and artificial. Your home or business is not.
Natural light changes throughout the day. If it’s not a new build, wall colours affect tone. Furniture alters contrast. Texture behaves differently depending on scale and space.
This is why so many people feel unsure after ordering samples online or visiting showrooms, they’re being asked to imagine too much.
When you see flooring in your own space, everything becomes clearer.

4. Expertise That Helps You
Choose Once and Choose Well
Another thing that matters far more than price is guidance and again, this happens in your space.
I’m able to really get a feel for what you want and need, simply by being there with you. We can walk around the rooms together, move the samples as we need and maybe most importantly, I can ask the right questions because they will come up naturally. No pressure. No upselling. Just me and Radville doing what we love to do, helping people put down floors that are perfect for them.
We understand how materials behave, how rooms work and how people live. Sometimes that means confirming a client’s instinct.
Other times, it may mean gently steering them away from a choice that looks great online but won’t perform well long term.
And sometimes it means showing a solution they hadn’t even considered yet.
The goal is always the same, we will help you make a decision you won’t second-guess in six months.
5. Why Convenience Is More Than a Nice-to-Have
We talk a lot about convenience at flooring online and in a general sense we feel the concept of convenience is often misunderstood.
True convenience isn’t about cutting corners, it’s about removing friction. It’s ease. It’s not having to take time off work to visit multiple shops across town. It’s not guessing how something will look once it’s installed and it’s definitely not paying for overheads that do nothing for you (or us).
When the process is easier, calmer and more personal, better decisions are made and that’s why we say convenience is luxury.
I promise you, you don’t need to have it all figured out at the start, the best flooring decisions usually come from keeping an open mind and allowing the right support to help you along the way.
